How WCB Treatment Works at Our Clinic

Alberta health care providers are responsible for invoicing WCB directly for medical services related to an accepted work injury. That means for approved treatment you are not asked to pay at the desk and you are not balance-billed afterwards. The claim runs between our clinic and WCB.

Physiotherapy is direct-access in Alberta, so you do not need a physician referral to book with us. What WCB does need is a reported claim, so the sooner your injury is reported the sooner treatment can be authorised.

The Steps After a Workplace Injury

What WCB Authorises

Under the current WCB Alberta physiotherapy contract, treatment is authorised in blocks rather than open-ended. For a standard injury this is typically up to 8 visits over 4 weeks. Where the injury involves a fracture or surgery, the initial block is larger, typically up to 16 visits over 8 weeks.

If you need more treatment than the initial block allows, that is normal and it is handled through progress reporting rather than by you making a separate request. Your physiotherapist submits a first report shortly after the initial assessment, then progress reports at set intervals, and WCB decides on continued treatment from those.

These are the general parameters of the provider contract. Your own authorisation depends on your claim, so if you want certainty about your specific case, WCB is the authority and your claim number is the key to any conversation with them.

Common WCB Questions

Can I choose my own physiotherapy clinic?

Yes. You are not required to attend a clinic chosen by your employer or by WCB. If you would rather be treated in Camrose close to home or work, you can book with us.

Do I need a doctor’s referral first?

No. Physiotherapy is direct-access in Alberta and you can book your assessment directly. What matters for WCB is that the injury has been reported and a claim exists.

What if my claim has not been accepted yet?

You can still be assessed and start treatment. Let us know the claim is pending so we handle the billing correctly. If the claim is later declined, the visits would become payable through your extended health plan or by you, so it is worth telling us early.

Will I have to pay anything?

For treatment WCB has approved on an accepted claim, no. Providers invoice WCB for the medical services related to the work injury rather than charging you.

What should I bring to the first appointment?

Your claim number if you have one, your employer’s name and contact, the date of injury, and a description of what happened and what you have not been able to do since.

What if I am also claiming through my extended health plan?

You cannot claim the same visit twice. While a WCB claim is active and covering treatment for that injury, the WCB claim is the one used. Unrelated treatment can still go through your own plan.

Returning to Work

The goal of WCB-funded treatment is a safe return to your actual job, not just the absence of pain in the clinic. That means treatment is built around the physical demands you have to go back to, whether that is lifting, driving, working overhead, or being on your feet for a full shift.

Where modified duties are part of the plan, clear reporting to WCB and your employer about what you can and cannot do yet is a large part of the work. Our occupational therapy and ergonomic assessment services support that side of the return.
