Direct billing Camrose

We bill your insurer directly for most extended health plans, so you pay only what your plan does not cover.

Are Physiotherapy and Massage Covered by Alberta Health Care?

No. Alberta Health Care does not cover physiotherapy, chiropractic or massage therapy for most adults. These are paid through extended health benefits, WCB, motor vehicle Section B, Veterans Affairs or AISH — and we bill most of those directly.

What Direct Billing Means for You

Direct billing means we submit your claim to your insurance provider at the end of your appointment and wait for their response before you pay. If your plan covers the full visit, you pay nothing at the desk. If it covers part of it, you pay only the remaining balance.

Without direct billing you would pay the full fee up front, then submit receipts yourself and wait weeks for reimbursement. Direct billing removes that step entirely.

We direct bill for physiotherapy, chiropractic care, massage therapy, acupuncture and the other services offered at our Camrose clinic, subject to what your individual plan covers.

Insurance Providers We Direct Bill

  • Alberta Blue Cross
  • Great-West Life
  • Sun Life Financial
  • Cowan Insurance Group
  • Manulife Financial
  • Maximum Benefit
  • Desjardins
  • Johnson Insurance
  • Green Shield Canada (GSC)

Your policy and group number

Found on your benefits card or your insurer’s app. We need both to submit the claim.

A second plan, if you have one

If you are covered under two plans we can often coordinate benefits so more of the visit is covered.

When Direct Billing Is Not Possible

There are a few situations where we cannot bill your insurer directly, and it is better to know before you arrive than at the front desk:

Some employers and some individual plans require the member to pay and claim themselves. Your insurer can confirm this, and we will provide a receipt with everything they need on it.
Most extended health plans cap the dollar amount or number of visits per year for each service. Once you reach that cap the visit becomes payable by you. We can check your remaining balance at the time of claim for most providers.
A minority of plans still require a physician referral before they will pay for physiotherapy or massage. You do not need a referral to be treated at our clinic, but your insurer may need one to reimburse.
Occasionally an insurer declines in real time because of a plan detail we cannot see. Payment is then due at the visit and you can submit the receipt yourself once the issue is resolved.

WCB, Motor Vehicle and Government-Funded Treatment

Not every claim runs through an extended health plan. If your injury happened at work, on the road, or you receive certain provincial benefits, a different process applies and in most cases you pay nothing at all:

Direct Billing Questions

No. Alberta Health Care does not fund massage therapy. Coverage comes from an extended health plan through your employer or a private policy, or from WCB, motor vehicle Section B, Veterans Affairs or AISH where the claim applies.
Most extended health plans do, up to an annual maximum, and many require the treatment be provided by a Registered Massage Therapist — which ours are. Whether we can bill your insurer directly depends on the plan; the list above is current.
Yes, through extended health benefits rather than the province. Keep your receipt if we cannot direct bill — it carries the therapist’s registration number, which is what insurers require for reimbursement.
No. Physiotherapy, chiropractic and massage therapy are all direct-access in Alberta, so you can book with us without seeing a doctor first. A referral is only relevant if your own insurance plan requires one for reimbursement.
Yes, for the providers listed above. Massage therapy usually sits in a separate category of your plan with its own annual maximum, so having physiotherapy coverage does not automatically mean massage is covered, and vice versa.
Your insurer’s member portal or app is the fastest way. For most of the providers we bill, we can also see your remaining balance when we submit the claim and tell you at the desk.
Let us know at booking. Coordination of benefits lets us submit to your primary plan first and then the secondary plan for the remainder, which often means little or nothing out of pocket.
Yes. Each family member needs to be listed as a dependent on the plan, and we will need the plan member’s details on file.

I have been seeing Hiya for my physio since a fall and a car accident. She is lovely and goes above and beyond for her clients, you can truly see she is passionate about her work. The front desk girls are all wonderful too! Always so nice, and remember you by name, greetings everyone as they come in the door. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about my experience.

Zoey was incredibly thorough—she listened carefully, explained the underlying causes of my persistent neck and shoulder problem, and provided treatment that delivered fast, noticeable results. The front office staff are exceptionally welcoming, friendly, and accommodating. It’s genuinely a pleasure to visit this clinic.
