We direct bill Alberta Blue Cross for physiotherapy, chiropractic, massage therapy and acupuncture, so you pay only what your plan does not cover.
Alberta Blue Cross Coverage for Physiotherapy Services
Alberta Blue Cross Coverage is one of the plans we direct bill. We submit your claim at the end of the appointment, the response comes back while you are still at the desk, and you pay only the portion your plan does not cover — often nothing at all.
You do not need a referral to book. Physiotherapy, chiropractic and massage therapy are direct-access professions in Alberta. A referral only matters if your particular plan makes reimbursement conditional on having one, which some employer plans still do.
How Your Alberta Blue Cross Coverage Varies by Plan
Alberta Blue Cross is not a single set of benefits. It administers employer group plans, individual plans and government-sponsored programs, and each has its own rules. Two people can both hold an Alberta Blue Cross card and have very different coverage.
The things worth knowing about your own plan before you book:
- Whether each service is covered separately. Physiotherapy, chiropractic and massage therapy usually sit in different categories with their own limits. Coverage for one does not imply coverage for another.
- Your annual maximum. Most plans cap either a dollar amount or a number of visits per benefit year, and the year may not run January to December.
- Your percentage of coverage. Many plans pay a percentage of the visit rather than all of it, leaving a small balance payable by you.
- Whether a referral is required for reimbursement. Less common than it used to be, but still present on some plans.
Your Alberta Blue Cross member portal or app will show all of this. We can also check your remaining balance when we submit the claim.
Alberta Blue Cross Questions
Not to be treated. Physiotherapy is direct-access in Alberta. Check your specific plan for whether a referral is needed for reimbursement.
Usually not. They are normally separate benefit categories with separate maximums. Check both if you plan to use both.
Your Alberta Blue Cross ID number and group or plan number, and the plan member’s details if you are covered as a dependent.
The remaining visits become payable by you, or by a second plan if you have one. We will tell you as soon as we can see the balance running low so there are no surprises.
Yes. If you are covered under two plans, tell us at booking and we will submit to the primary plan first and the secondary plan for the remainder.

I have been seeing Hiya for my physio since a fall and a car accident. She is lovely and goes above and beyond for her clients, you can truly see she is passionate about her work. The front desk girls are all wonderful too! Always so nice, and remember you by name, greetings everyone as they come in the door. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about my experience.Posted on Google![]()

Zoey was incredibly thorough—she listened carefully, explained the underlying causes of my persistent neck and shoulder problem, and provided treatment that delivered fast, noticeable results. The front office staff are exceptionally welcoming, friendly, and accommodating. It’s genuinely a pleasure to visit this clinic.Posted on Google![]()
