Chiropractic care for lower back pain

The problem chiropractic has the strongest evidence for, and the one we see most.

Where the Evidence Actually Sits

Low back pain is where spinal manipulation has its best support. Clinical guidelines in Canada and elsewhere generally list manual therapy, including spinal manipulation, among the recommended options for non-specific low back pain, particularly alongside staying active and exercise.

Two things are worth being straight about. First, manipulation is one reasonable option among several rather than uniquely effective. Second, the combination matters more than any single technique — treatment plus movement plus not resting for too long consistently beats passive treatment on its own.

That is how we use it. Dr. Robert Weeks provides chiropractic care in Camrose as part of a plan that also includes what you do between appointments.

What We Assess

Low back pain is not one condition, and treatment depends on which one you have. Assessment sorts that out:

Physiotherapist performing Manual Therapy Camrose assessment for joint and muscle pain

Mechanical low back pain

Pain that changes with position and movement, without nerve involvement. The most common presentation and the most responsive.

Hands-on manual therapy provided during Physiotherapy in Camrose treatment

Sacroiliac and pelvic pain

Typically one-sided, low, and worse with single-leg loading such as stairs. See chiropractic for sciatica where it refers down the leg.

Disc-related pain

Often worse with sitting and bending, sometimes with leg symptoms. Managed differently and more cautiously.

Facet joint restriction

Localised, often worse with extension and rotation.

Something that is not mechanical

The reason assessment includes screening. Some back pain needs a physician, not a chiropractor.

What Treatment Looks Like

Adjustment where it is indicated, soft tissue work around it, and a small number of exercises you actually do. Most mechanical low back pain improves over a handful of visits. If it is not changing, that is information — it means the working diagnosis needs revisiting rather than the same treatment repeated.

We will also be direct about what makes the difference between recovering and recurring: staying active rather than resting, addressing whatever load caused it, and building capacity in the muscles that support the spine. Therapeutic exercise covers that side.

Most mechanical low back pain responds within a handful of visits. You should be given a plan with an endpoint, not an open-ended schedule.
Usually not. Imaging changes management in a minority of cases and often shows age-related findings that are present in people with no pain at all. It is used when the assessment indicates it.
Numbness in the saddle area, loss of bladder or bowel control, progressive leg weakness, unexplained weight loss, fever, or pain following significant trauma. Those need medical assessment promptly, not chiropractic.
Generally no. Prolonged rest tends to make mechanical back pain worse. Modified activity is almost always better than stopping.

I have been seeing Hiya for my physio since a fall and a car accident. She is lovely and goes above and beyond for her clients, you can truly see she is passionate about her work. The front desk girls are all wonderful too! Always so nice, and remember you by name, greetings everyone as they come in the door. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about my experience.
