Movement is the treatment — and the thing most people with arthritis are told to avoid.
For years the standard advice for osteoarthritis was to rest the joint and avoid loading it, on the reasoning that a worn joint would wear faster with use. Arthritis Physiotherapy Camrose can help patients understand appropriate exercise and joint loading.
That advice has been reversed. Current guidelines put exercise and education first for osteoarthritis, ahead of medication and well ahead of surgery. Loading a joint appropriately maintains the cartilage, the surrounding muscle and the joint’s tolerance. Avoiding it does the opposite.
This matters practically because a lot of people arrive having spent years being careful, and are considerably more deconditioned than the arthritis alone would account for.

Muscle around an arthritic joint reduces the load going through it. This is the single most useful thing available.

Maintaining what movement you have, and often recovering some that was lost to avoidance.

Working out how much you can do, and building from there without flaring it.

Where a brace or walking aid genuinely helps function rather than replacing capacity.

Where relevant to lower limb joints, handled without lecturing.

If joint replacement is on the horizon, prehabilitation measurably improves recovery.
Everything above concerns osteoarthritis. Inflammatory arthritis — rheumatoid, psoriatic, ankylosing spondylitis — is a different category of disease, driven by the immune system rather than by joint wear.
It requires medical management, usually by a rheumatologist, and the medication side is what controls the disease. Physiotherapy has a genuine supporting role in maintaining movement, strength and function, but it is a supporting role.
If you have joint pain with morning stiffness lasting over an hour, swelling in multiple joints, or systemic symptoms like fatigue and fever, see your physician. That pattern needs investigating rather than treating as wear and tear. Arthritis Physiotherapy Camrose can provide support after medical assessment.
No. This is the most persistent myth about arthritis, and current evidence points the other way — appropriate loading helps.
Some discomfort is acceptable and expected. It should settle within 24 hours and should not be climbing week to week. We set that level with you rather than leaving you to guess.
For many people, yes — often substantially. And if replacement does happen, going in stronger produces a better recovery.
X-ray changes correlate poorly with symptoms. Plenty of people with significant changes have little pain, and vice versa. We treat you, not the image.
Whichever helps you. Most people with osteoarthritis prefer heat, particularly before moving. Neither will do harm.

Been told to take it easy for years? Book an assessment — there is usually far more available than you have been offered.
