How Often Should You Get a Massage?

A realistic answer, without the upsell.

It Depends What You Are Using It For

There is no clinically correct massage frequency. What there is, is a sensible interval for the reason you are coming, and that reason changes over time.

A Sensible Starting Point

An active problem

Weekly or fortnightly for the first two to four sessions, while things are changing. Then space out.

Chiropractic vs Massage Therapy at Central Physiotherapy

General tension and stress

Every four to six weeks suits most people. Often enough to stop tension re-accumulating, infrequent enough to be sustainable.

Camrose Physiotherapy

Training regularly

Every two to four weeks in season, adjusted around competition. See sports massage.

Ergonomic Training

Physically demanding work

Every three to four weeks tends to work for trades, nursing, farm work and anything with repetitive loading.

Desk-based work

Every four to six weeks, combined with actually moving during the day. See posture and desk work.

Couple speaking with a therapist during a session in a clinic

Pregnancy

Often more frequently in the third trimester as discomfort increases. See prenatal massage.

How to Tell If Your Interval Is Right

A simple test: how long does the benefit last?

If you feel good for a week and then the tension is fully back, you are probably going too infrequently for what you are asking massage to do — or massage alone is not the right tool and something needs to change in how you are loading the tissue.

If you arrive and cannot really identify anything to work on, you are going more often than you need. That is not a problem if you enjoy it and can afford it, but it is worth knowing.

The other honest point: massage maintains, it does not build. If the same tension returns every month, the durable fix is usually strength and movement capacity rather than more frequent treatment. Therapeutic exercise and kinesiology cover that, and combining them means you need massage less often, not more.

Practically, not in terms of harm at sensible intervals. In terms of value, yes — there is a point past which more frequent treatment adds little.
Front-load them while an active problem is settling, then spread the rest. We can check your remaining balance when we submit — see direct billing.
For many people, yes — it keeps tension from reaching the point where it becomes a problem. It is a preference, not a clinical necessity, and it should be presented that way.
Continuity helps, because they know your history and what has worked. It is not essential, and seeing someone else occasionally is perfectly fine.

I have been seeing Hiya for my physio since a fall and a car accident. She is lovely and goes above and beyond for her clients, you can truly see she is passionate about her work. The front desk girls are all wonderful too! Always so nice, and remember you by name, greetings everyone as they come in the door. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about my experience.

Zoey was incredibly thorough—she listened carefully, explained the underlying causes of my persistent neck and shoulder problem, and provided treatment that delivered fast, noticeable results. The front office staff are exceptionally welcoming, friendly, and accommodating. It’s genuinely a pleasure to visit this clinic.
