New Patients and Your First Visit

What happens at your first appointment, what to bring, and what it will cost.

You Do Not Need a Referral

Physiotherapy, chiropractic and massage therapy are all direct-access professions in Alberta. You can book with any of them without seeing a doctor first.

The one exception is your own insurance: a minority of extended health plans still require a physician referral before they will reimburse. That is a plan rule rather than a clinical one, and it is worth checking with your insurer before your first visit.

Your questions

Write them down. People forget them at the appointment and remember on the drive home.

What the First Appointment Involves

Most of a first appointment is assessment and conversation, not treatment. Your practitioner will ask what brought you in, how long it has been going on, what makes it better and worse, what you do for work, and what you want to get back to. Then a physical examination appropriate to the problem.

You should leave knowing three things: what your practitioner thinks is going on, what the plan is, and what you are doing between appointments. If any of those is unclear, ask before you leave — it is a reasonable question and a good practitioner will welcome it.

Longer than a follow-up, because of the assessment. Massage appointments are booked by length, so you choose.
Usually yes, once the assessment supports it and you have agreed to it. Occasionally the right first step is something else, or a referral elsewhere.
See fees and coverage. Most patients pay considerably less than the full fee because we direct bill nine major insurers, and on WCB and motor vehicle claims you pay nothing.
Yes. Have a look at the team page and ask for them by name when you book.
Describe the problem when you call. Choosing the right practitioner is our job, not yours — and see conditions we treat.
At the door. We are at 6028 48 Avenue in Camrose.

Coverage & Direct Billing

We direct bill Alberta Blue Cross, Great-West Life, Sun Life Financial, Cowan Insurance Group, Manulife Financial, Maximum Benefit, Desjardins, Johnson Insurance and Green Shield Canada. We also handle WCB claims and motor vehicle accident claims directly.

I have been seeing Hiya for my physio since a fall and a car accident. She is lovely and goes above and beyond for her clients, you can truly see she is passionate about her work. The front desk girls are all wonderful too! Always so nice, and remember you by name, greetings everyone as they come in the door. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about my experience.

Zoey was incredibly thorough—she listened carefully, explained the underlying causes of my persistent neck and shoulder problem, and provided treatment that delivered fast, noticeable results. The front office staff are exceptionally welcoming, friendly, and accommodating. It’s genuinely a pleasure to visit this clinic.
