Chiropractor or Physiotherapist: Which Do You Need?

Two professions with real overlap. Here is how to pick, without the sales pitch.

Chiropractor vs Physiotherapist How Do They Differ

There is more overlap between chiropractor vs physiotherapist than either profession’s marketing usually admits. Both assess movement, both treat musculoskeletal pain with hands-on techniques, both prescribe exercise, and both are direct-access in Alberta so you can book either without a referral.

For a lot of common problems — a stiff, sore low back, a restricted neck — a good practitioner in either profession will help you, and the individual practitioner matters more than the letters after their name.

That said, the training emphasis differs, and there are situations where one is clearly the better starting point.

Start with physiotherapy

A diagnosed injury, post-surgical rehabilitation, a condition needing a progressive loading programme, neurological conditions, balance and gait, pelvic health.

Muscular tension and soft tissue restriction without a clear joint or injury problem.

Practical Differences Between a Chiropractor or Physiotherapist

Emphasis. Chiropractic training centres on the spine, joint function and manual adjustment. Physiotherapy training is broader across rehabilitation, exercise prescription, post-operative recovery, and neurological and cardiorespiratory conditions.

Appointment shape. Chiropractic appointments tend to be shorter and more frequent early on. Physiotherapy appointments tend to be longer with more exercise instruction inside them. Neither is better; they suit different problems.

Insurance. Most extended health plans cover both, in separate categories with separate annual maximums. That means using one does not consume the other’s budget — worth knowing if you have a problem that could reasonably go either way.

Referrals. Neither requires one in Alberta. Some insurance plans require one for reimbursement; that is a plan rule, not a clinical one.

Why We Have Both Chiropractor or Physiotherapist Care

Central Physiotherapy & Massage has physiotherapists, a chiropractor, registered massage therapists, an acupuncturist, a manual osteopath, an occupational therapist, a kinesiologist and a psychologist under one roof in Camrose.

The practical benefit is that you are not the one who has to work out which profession you need. Book an assessment, and if the person you see is not the right one for your problem, they will say so and point you to the colleague who is. That is a much better outcome than choosing wrong and persisting with it because it is what you booked.

I have been seeing Hiya for my physio since a fall and a car accident. She is lovely and goes above and beyond for her clients, you can truly see she is passionate about her work. The front desk girls are all wonderful too! Always so nice, and remember you by name, greetings everyone as they come in the door. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about my experience.

Zoey was incredibly thorough—she listened carefully, explained the underlying causes of my persistent neck and shoulder problem, and provided treatment that delivered fast, noticeable results. The front office staff are exceptionally welcoming, friendly, and accommodating. It’s genuinely a pleasure to visit this clinic.

Chiropractor or Physiotherapist: Common Questions

Either can help, and for most straightforward back pain the difference matters less than starting early. Chiropractic tends to lead with joint manipulation; physiotherapy tends to lead with graded loading and movement retraining. If one is not working after a fair trial, we say so and change course.

Yes. They are not competing treatments. Under one roof the two practitioners can see the same notes and avoid duplicating work, which is the main reason we offer both.

No. Both are direct-access professions in Alberta. Your extended health plan may still ask for a referral on file before reimbursing you.

Most extended health plans cover both, usually under separate annual limits, which means using one does not eat into the other. We direct bill where the plan allows it.

Start with the assessment rather than the profession. Alberta Section B coverage funds treatment for both, and the first appointment sets the treatment plan. Get seen early — the funded protocol is time-sensitive.

Yes. That is the point of a combined clinic. If your chiropractor thinks physiotherapy would move things along faster, they will say so, and the handover happens inside the building.
