How Often Should You See a Chiropractor?

A fair question, and one you should get a specific answer to rather than an open-ended schedule.

It Depends on Why You Are There

There is no universal frequency, and anyone who gives you one without assessing you first is guessing. What there should be is a plan with a stated purpose and an endpoint you are working toward.

Broadly, treatment falls into three phases, and the frequency drops as you move through them.

The Three Phases

Getting it settled

More frequent early on while symptoms are active — often once or twice weekly for a short period. The goal is reducing pain and restoring movement.

Making it stick

Spacing out as things improve, while the exercise and load changes do the durable work. Every two to four weeks is common.

Keeping it away

Only if you want it. Some people with physically demanding work or a long history find periodic treatment useful. Many people simply stop, and that is a perfectly good outcome.

Questions Worth Asking Your Practitioner

Whether you are being treated here or anywhere else, these are reasonable things to ask, and you should get clear answers:

  • What are we trying to achieve, and how will we know when we have?
  • Roughly how many visits do you expect, and what happens if it is not improving by then?
  • What am I doing between appointments, and how much does that matter?
  • What is the plan for reducing frequency?

On maintenance care. The evidence for ongoing preventive chiropractic in people without symptoms is limited. That does not make it worthless — some people genuinely function better with periodic treatment and choose it knowingly. But it should be your informed choice, not a schedule you were signed up to. If you are ever told you need indefinite appointments to stay well, ask what the reasoning is.

Common Questions

No. Most people are treated for a specific problem and then stop. Ongoing care is optional and should be presented that way.
Because that is when symptoms are active and gains are easiest to consolidate. Frequency should come down as you improve.
That is important information, not a reason for more of the same. After a reasonable trial the diagnosis should be revisited, or you should be referred on.
Most plans cap either visits or dollars per benefit year. We can check your remaining balance when we submit a claim — see direct billing.

I have been seeing Hiya for my physio since a fall and a car accident. She is lovely and goes above and beyond for her clients, you can truly see she is passionate about her work. The front desk girls are all wonderful too! Always so nice, and remember you by name, greetings everyone as they come in the door. I have nothing but wonderful things to say about my experience.
